New lead safety regulations

Beginning April 22, 2010 the Environmental Protection Agency will require any contractor who might disturb lead paint in homes, schools and child care facilities built before 1978 to be trained and accredited in proper lead safety techniques. The law, known as the Renovation, Repair and Painting Program, holds contractors responsible for ensuring renovations follow strict protocol for maximizing the containment of poisonous lead dust. Homeowners living in pre-1978 homes should expect to receive a “Renovate Right” pamphlet from their service provider before beginning any work regulated by the law.

U.S. Department of Energy R5 Windows Program

On May 27, 2010, the U.S. Department of Energy today announced the launch of the R-5 Windows Volume Purchase Program. In a nutshell...the R5 "Volume Purchase" program is an effort to promote windows with an overall window R Factor of 5. Vinyl replacement windows purchased through Maintenance Free Windows, Inc. will qualify for this program utilizing our Seal Smart Triad 7 and Seal Smart Extreme glass packages.

Key Points of the Program:

* R-5 windows are highly insulating windows with a whole-window R-value of 5 (a U-factor of around 0.2) and are the top tier of energy-efficient windows for cold and mixed climates available today

* Common ENERGY STAR windows only have an R-value of 3. Increasing the R-value from 3 to 5 reduces average heat loss through the windows by 40% and saves consumer money on energy bills.

* The principal barrier to widespread market commercialization of R-5 windows is cost. The Department of Energy is working with industry and potential buyers to lower cost and make these energy-efficient products more readily available.
